WHY DO YOU BELIEVE PEOPLE WEAR HATS?

Women love wearing hats, we have such a great hat wearing tradition in this country and a wonderful season full of hat wearing opportunities. Royal Ascot is the highlight of that calendar and the focal point of our year. The best of British millinery is out on display. Hats are unlike any other accessory, they can change your whole look and personality.

WAS THERE ONE PARTICULAR HAT THAT YOU FEEL PUT YOU ON THE MAP?

I don’t really think there was. I have been in business for 28 years and it takes time to establish a brand and to discover your own handwriting. My years of dealing with clients mean that I now have a confidence and knowledge of what works for women. My style has evolved over the years.

DO HAT TRENDS TEND TO CHANGE?

Yes definitely. A lot of the designs are influenced by current fashions. Some years there are lots of flowers and sometimes styles lean towards a simpler silhouette. A lot of hat choices are down to an individual and their outfit. This year has been all about the brimmed hat, I think women are wanting to make a big impact and a bold statement.

WHEN SOMEONE COMES IN TO BUY A HAT, WHAT ARE THE FIRST THING THEY SHOULD CONSIDER?

What occasion they are are attending, what outfit they are wearing, the venue, their personality…there is so much to consider but then that is a large part of my job as a milliner, to guide my clients to find the perfect hat.

WHAT DID THE ROYAL WEDDING MEAN TO YOU AS A MILLINER?

I thought there was a fantastic display of hats at the Royal wedding. The guests were so well dressed and had really put a lot of consideration to their hats. Occasions like that have a real impact on the hat industry, it inspires women to embrace hat wearing  and we had a lot of our hats worn by guests. My personal favourite was Countess Spencer who wore our purple disc with bows…we had so many compliments!

YOU DESIGN A LOT FOR THE QUEEN, DOES SHE HAVE A SPECIFIC STYLE?

The Queen is a very seasoned hat wearer and has a style that really works for her. She always looks so well dressed and has such a great eye for colour.

WHAT SETS YOUR BRAND APART FROM OTHER MILLINERS?

I think our attention to detail in all aspecst of the business. My designs are very feminine and I aim to flatter - I want my clients to look beautiful and elegant. We take great care with all our clients to give them a great experience and make sure they look perfect for their occasion whatever that may be. Most of all, I am passionate about the quality and finish of my hats, crafting is very important to me.

WHY DO PEOPLE WEAR HATS

For Ascot specifically it's a part of the dress code. You must wear a hat or a head piece with a solid base of 4 inches or more in diameter. It is a British tradition that hats are worn at Royal Ascot and it is a big part of the day, especially on Ladies Day.

WAS THERE ONE PARTICULAR HAT THAT YOU FEEL PUT YOU ON THE MAP?

I think it was probably when HRH Duchess of Cambridge asked me to create a piece for the Diamond Jubilee.

DO PEOPLE WEAR DIFFERENT HATS FOR DIFFERENT OCCASIONS ie: Weddings,Races? OR IS IT BASED ON YOUR OUTFIT?

It depends on the dress code for the event. When you are invited to an event it is always good to check what the dress code is.  For instance, you can wear a more relaxed style for a country wedding and a more formal look for a church wedding. Race events also differ, Royal Ascot having some of the stricter rules. It also depends on your silhouette & the outfit you are wearing along with the particular hue of colours that suit you skin tone.

ARE THERE HAT RULES FOR DIFFERENT EVENTS?

Yes. Most events will have a dress code which you should review before going to buy your outfit such as the Royal Wedding!

AS A MILLINER WHAT DID THE ROYAL WEDDING MEAN TO YOU?

I loved all the hats at the wedding, everyone looked so glamourous.  We dressed several people including HRH Countess of Wessex who was wearing a bespoke hat made specifically for the occasion.  It is one of my favourite pieces we have created for the Countess.

WHO IS THE MOST EXCITING PERSON YOU DESIGNED A HAT FOR?

Having your pieces worn by the Royal family is a huge honour and every time I see them wear a piece I'm truly excited.

WHAT SETS YOUR BRAND APART FROM OTHER MILLINERS?

We use the traditional methods to make and finish the hats. I am passionate about millinery and we don’t outsource anything.  Everything is hand made in store on The Kings Road, this includes hand dying all the fabrics.  I have a small but passionate team and we work hard especially at this time of year!
